SB 25

LC0283
Christine Kaufmann

Provide monitoring of childhood body mass index trends

2 comments:

  1. Dear Senator Murphy and Members of the Committee:

I serve as the Missoula City-County Commission representative on our local board of health and can testify that monitoring children’s body mass index during this national epidemic of obesity is both necessary and doable. Missoula County has done so for two years and we have the following benefits as a result:

We know that Missoula kids are better off than the national average, but still showing a worrisome rate of obesity.
We can monitor local trends as we work to combat obesity.
Our schools and other local agencies are working together to support nutrition and physical activity efforts.

What is lacking, however, is a way to both contribute to, and compare our local data, to state-level trends. At a time when many states have years’ worth of obesity trend data, Montana is without this basic public health indicator. SB 25 provides an optional and minimal but effective way to monitor the trend of obesity among Montana’s children.

The Missoula Board of County Commissioners encourages your support of SB 25.
