Health opposes HB 227 which would allow religious exemptions immunizations in daycares. Daycares house the young ages most vulnerable to childhood infectious diseases, yet not all children can be fully immunized because fully immune status takes years. The current pertussis outbreak in Missoula is a case in point. Infants younger than one year are not protected from pertussis even if their baby shots are on time. Yet they are the most vulnerable to serious complications from pertussis. Therefore everyone around them, including their teachers and slightly older fellow daycare mates must be immunized. -Ellen Leahy
